I dutifully explored Google and Wikipedia and GeForce's site, looked at all the specs I could find, and really haven't found conclusively what monitor specs my friggin' system supports. I've been messing with this issue of either repurposing or replacing my 30" Dell 3700WFP dual-link DVI monitor for almost two months, and while I've learned a lot about the state of displays and connectivity options I've also found it to be maybe the most frustrating and ambiguous aspect of computer system architecture.

If the response time is under 5ms, how bad is 60 Hz for gaming and HD video? As long as I can play Netflix or DVDs at full screen without tearing I'd be happy. Looks like the best HDMI I could get is WQHD (2560x1600) at 60 Hz.

Option 1 is using my HDMI port and just buy the monitor, or I can use my Thunderbolt port, which would cost an additional $200 for a Thunder Dock so I can free up the port for use with the monitor.

I was looking at some newer sim games like Sid Meier's Civilization V and Civilization Beyond Earth. It plays beautifully on my 17" monitor display at ultra high quality and 1920x1080. :-) I am playing Skyrim now, and that will keep me busy for a while. Really, I have a lot of gaming catching up to do.
Yes, I have the better version of the GTX 860M. (there may be some other advantages/disadvantages with G-SYNC if your card supports it.?) Acer and Asus have some nice 2560x1440 144hz IPS monitors but except on older games, a GTX 860M is going to be too slow to push framerates fast enough to take advantage. If you can't drive 4K with your setup then 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 would be the next lower step. However, if your concern is HD video and desktop work first and foremost, and gaming is secondary, I would buy the best monitor you can justify for your use and just deal with gaming at lower resolutions/low quality.
What games exactly are you playing? 'cause if it's modern state of the art titles, I'll be honest, a GTX 860M is probably not going to cut it at higher detail settings and 1920x1080, period. HDTV panel refresh rates have f-all to do with video cards, look up articles on G-SYNC or FreeSync or the other 120hz/144hz monitors for a better explanation on refresh rates. Even 1920x1080 at a nominal 60fps target is going to be too much depending on the panel. GTX860M is a pretty reasonable GPU, but yeah, it's more on the mid-range/modest side of performance.
